I am excited to start the new year with a presentation of my academic research on 19th century Black American composer Francis Johnson at the CMEA Bay Section conference tomorrow!
Last year I was a recipient of San Francisco State University’s Marcus Transformative Research Award to focus on the work of this fascinating musician. He was a prolific composer, performer, educator, and my favorite part, a keyed bugle virtuoso!

Huge thank you to James Thompson and Mark Scatterday for hosting me for my Eastman School of Music residency in the fall where we premiered the first version of the suite with the Eastman Brass Guild! Additional thank you to Gerry Szymanski at Eastman’s Sibley Music Library, as well as the University of Pennsylvania Kurt Stein Collection for help locating fantastic research materials!
