April 18, 2015: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
April 19, 2015: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Jessica Rivera and Kelley O'Connor

The Classix Six finale closes the season with what is sure to be a memorable concert in Reno Philharmonic history. The evening begins with Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, featuring the brilliant sounds of three piccolo trumpets. That sets the stage for Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 2 in C minor “Resurrection” arguably the most important work composed by the twentieth century’s premiere symphonist.

Sila: The Breath of the World
By John Luther Adams
-----------------------------
The concert experience is reimagined with Sila: The Breath of the World, another acclaimed outdoor work by Pulitzer-prize winning composer John Luther Adams. Inspired by the Inuit concept of sila, the spirit that animates the world, 80 musicians will be placed in concentric circles while listeners are welcomed to roam, creating an absorbing and mystical experience. The piece premiered at Lincoln Center last summer and continues his exploration with sound in an outdoor environment after the success of Inuksuit opened the 2012 Ojai series.

Songscape
October 2015
Songscape examines the nature of utterance.
How does an individual find her voice;
how does she learn to understand others as language changes?
For insight we’ll listen to David Lang’s quotations of the character of death in Schubert art song and to Lee Hyla’s conjecture of what Etruscan might sound like as played through modern reed instruments.
Gérard Grisey’s magnificent final work, Quatre Chants, is a reliquary and an expressive catharsis.

The sensual, expansive soundscapes of revered Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho are the focus of the fall concert by UC Berkeley's resident new music group. The celebrated ensemble collaborates with Saariaho as part of the composer's semester-long appointment as a distinguished Bloch Professor in the Department of Music. The program's centerpiece is a chamber adaptation of her exquisite cello concerto Notes on Light, an exploration of color and timbre that reflects her deep immersion in the world of electronic music.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
MUSIC AND LIBRETTO BY RICHARD WAGNER

The best singer-songwriter gets the girl.

In his comic masterpiece, Wagner set aside gods and goddesses to tell a touchingly human story about the power of art. When an impetuous young singer arrives in a proud German city determined to dazzle the townsfolk and a beautiful woman, his attempts to prove himself find sympathy in a wise cobbler-poet.
